Old Homestead on Gates Chapel
I am addicted to old barns and old houses probably because of my love for history. This is an oil on canvas of an old family farmhouse located in Ellijay, Georgia. I recently was fortunate to meet the family members that belonged to the original owner/builder of this house. John Evans built this house for his family of five children and wife. Generations of this couple still remain in and around Georgia. I was approached at the recent Apple/Arts on the Square by the great great grandson of John Evans who immediately recognized his family's old home as he was visiting the Festival. He was so gracious and even allowed me to take his picture, which I promised not to post. He gave me some history and said such wonderful things about the house and my painting. Throughout the weekend, four different sets of family members came by to view the painting. I now know there was a porch swing, either on the right or left according to the granddaughters. One insists it is on the right. So like families! :) There was a room upstairs on one side where some of them slept and a little bed in that room attached to the back. The father grew corn and there is woodshed I plan to paint soon where he stacked the "fodder". One granddaughter wanted me to know there were always beautiful shrubbery and flowers planted around the house, stones placed around the front of the porch, steps and a stone fireplace. I cannot describe how excited it made me feel to see the excitement of remembering on their faces. It definitely reminds me of why I like old, rustic things and places. Thank you to The EVANS family and those with your new married names that I won't post.
I can just imagine the mother standing on the porch in better days calling out to her children to come in for supper. The house still stands on stacked rocks...amazing with years of strong winds. To me, it is important to preserve these old memories for future generations to share and enjoy as much as I enjoy today. Hopefully, I have captured that "come back home feeling".
