Description
Schoodic Point, an original 12 x 9 Oil on Raphael Premium Archival, Oil primed Linen panel. I was fortunate, thanks to great friends, Bobbie and Dave, that invited us to share their vacation in Birch Harbor, Maine. They even took my easel, paint and brushes up in the car so we could fly. I was thrilled to be able to paint three pictures en Plein Air on site in Maine. My hubby set me up on the Rocks and sat nearby as I painted this in 2 hours with my palette knife. It was an amazing experience like no other…hearing the waves crash as the seagulls chimed in and feeling the early unexpected warm sun on my face and arms while the steady breeze quickly cool me off. Schoodic Point is located at the southern tip of Schoodic Peninsula in Winter Harbor, Maine, provides one of the best places to view pounding surf during rough seas as well as stunning views of Cadillac Mountain to the West. The darker Rocks are large veins of dark basalt that forced their way through the older granite along the Schoodic shoreline. Both the older granite, and the much darker basalt, are igneous rocks that were formed from the cooling of magma during past volcanic activity. The contrast between these two can easily be seen throughout the peninsula. You may have noticed this in the thousands of boulders on the shoreline as well.
