Artist's Description
Recently accepted for the Gilmer Arts 2018 Annual Juried Art Exhibit Feb 24 - March 26. The original will be on display and for sale at Gilmer Arts, Ellijay until that time. If still available, the original will go on sale after the show here on FAA.
This is an original 24 x 18 oil on canvas
I love Ellijay. I love all the old buildings, the architecture, the families and businesses and struggles they all represent. When I painted the River Street Tavern next door, I was told that this two side by side buildings were both owned by Penland brothers. After speaking to Sam Penland,Jr. the Grandson of Sam, Sr. and original builder and owner of this store, I have learned the left side of the store was built in 1914 as a Grocery/Mercantile store. The right side was added in 1920 to be used as a warehouse. The original building was made of all red bricks made in Ellijay at the Brick factory. When the Depression hit, the blue

About Jan Dappen

Jan Kornegay Dappen is a self-taught artist. She is originally from Columbus, Ga and presently a local Ellijay artist living in the North Georgia Mountains. She is a founding member of the Gilmer Fine Artists Guild,now TAG, Secretary of the Gilmer Arts Board and Chair of the Golf for the Arts Tournament-New Gallery/Education Center Renovation Fund. She loves painting en Plein Air and often helps organize the Plein Air, Art in the Mountains. Jan primarily works in oils but also teaches classes in Acrylics. She has been recognized locally and internationally for the following awards: 2024 - LOBSTERING AT SCHOODIC POINT- 1ST Place, Gilmer Arts Juried Exhibition Competition in May, Ellijay, Ga.
