I love Ellijay. I love all the old buildings, the architecture, the families and businesses and struggles they all represent. When I painted the River Street Tavern next door, I was told that this two side by side buildings were both owned by Penland brothers. After speaking to Sam Penland,Jr. the Grandson of Sam, Sr. and original builder and owner of this store, I have learned the left side of the store was built in 1914 as a Grocery/Mercantile store. The right side was added in 1920 to be used as a warehouse. The original building was made of all red bricks made in Ellijay at the Brick factory. When the Depression hit, the blue
"Ghost Sign" was added to the side of the building to remind people they must pay in cash. Limiting their acceptance of credit allowed this store and one other to survive the Depression Era. The Checkered board look was not added until after the Depression and still remains today. Probably the painting was added because the Brothers became Purina Chow Distributors. My favorite time of day is just before Sunset, when the buildings take on a pink cast and reflections in the window pick up all the surrounding sights. This building now houses the Hometown Florist and Yesterday's Decor. Their lovely displays enhance the beauty of this favorite Ellijay Store, especially at night.

We Heart Penland’s""
Although everything is getting older by the minute, Penland’s will always stand.
There’s just something about it that draws the eye and makes the heart expand;
And it’s so comforting to know that although the whole world may change,
The landmarks of a little, good living, forever will remain.
For the ancient roads and broken sidewalks all lead to the center of bliss,
Where it is easy to mend a broken heart with the memory of the sweetest kiss,
Kind of like the day your Granny wiped your tears, and told you the world was just so grand,
And though she was getting older by the minute, the kingdom of heaven would always stand.
