Title
Maggie and Caruso -Portrait of a Flapper Girl
Artist
Jan Dappen
Medium
Painting - Oil On Canvas
Description
Original 24 x 30 oil painting on Linen Canvas of a young 1920s Flapper Girl and her dog. She is obviously dressed for an elegant evening event. As usual, I developed an artist/subject relationship with this young lady and her dog. I could feel she was a spirited, adventurous, lovely young lady. I would love to have met her.
Maggie, a Texan, was a prep school student at Gulf Park College in Gulf Port, Mississippi, in 1922. Her dog, Caruso, starred in plays with her. Maggie went on to graduate from Gulf Park with a degree in dramatics and elocution. She was a lovely lady and an angel on earth who lived to be 97 years old.
This portrait was a commissioned painting and the original is sold, however canvas prints and other products are available here to purchase.
Flappers were a generation of young Western women in the 1920s who wore short skirts, bobbed their hair, listened to jazz, and flaunted their disdain for what was then considered acceptable behavior. . Flappers are icons of the Roaring Twenties, the social, political turbulence and increased transatlantic cultural exchange that followed the end of World War I, as well as the export of American jazz culture to Europe.
